Giving Unsold Estate Sale Items a Second Life: Why We Partner with Community Forklift

At Birch & Brass, our job doesn’t necessarily end when the last shopper walks out the door. One of the biggest questions families have when planning an estate sale is: What happens to items that don’t sell? Whenever possible, our answer is to find those items another home.

That’s one of the reasons Birch & Brass is proud to partner with Community Forklift, a nonprofit reuse center serving the greater Washington, D.C. area.

What Happens After an Estate Sale?

Even a very successful estate sale will usually have items left behind. There may be furniture, household goods, tools, lighting, or other useful items that simply didn’t find the right buyer during the few days of the sale.

When we're helping a family with a post-sale clean-out, we try to avoid sending usable items directly to a junk hauler or landfill.

Instead, as often as possible, we arrange for Community Forklift to come to the home after the sale and collect eligible unsold items for donation and reuse. Only after that process is complete do we turn to a hauling company for items that cannot be donated.

For our clients, this can mean fewer items that need to be hauled away, a potential tax-deductible donation, and the reassurance that many of their belongings will continue to be useful to someone else.

Why Community Forklift?

Community Forklift's mission fits naturally with the work we do at Birch & Brass.

Their work is centered around reuse—keeping useful materials out of the waste stream and making them available to the community again. Their warehouse is filled with donated and salvaged materials that can find their way into new homes, renovation projects, creative projects, and community organizations.

That idea of reuse is especially meaningful in the estate sale business.

The homes we work in are filled with things that families have accumulated over decades. While those belongings may no longer be needed by one family, that doesn't mean they've reached the end of their useful lives.

A light fixture can go into another home. A piece of furniture can furnish a first apartment. Something that might otherwise have been discarded can become exactly what another person was looking for.

A Better Ending for the Things We Leave Behind

Estate sales are ultimately about transition. Families are moving, downsizing, settling an estate, or preparing a home for its next chapter.

We believe the belongings inside that home deserve thoughtful handling, too.

Our first goal is always to sell as much as we reasonably can for our clients. But when something doesn't sell, we're grateful to have organizations like Community Forklift that give us another option.

It means less waste and more items staying in our community rather than ending up in a landfill.
